THUG – True Hustler Under God tells the story of four youngins who urgently need to get a replacement for an expensive gift that they have broken – not knowing that they are being followed. The Afro-German comedy is showing a small section of the African youth in Hamburg. Director Bradley Iyamu shows what problems these children have to deal with in everyday life and how the kids deal with it in a creative way!
“I directed my first short-film in 2013 (Glass of Hennessy). Last year I wanted to do another movie, but this time a movie about black youth. That’s something we don’t have here in Germany…Whenever “others” show us in movies, it’s stereotypical e.g refugees, drug-dealers etc… I wanted to change that, Afro-German movies shouldn’t be an exception. ”
The self-funded movie was shot within 3 weeks with knows actors like Cosma Shiva Hagen, Jerry Kwarteng („The Correspondence“, „Tatort“, „Letzte Spur Berlin“) before it was shown in local cinemas around Hamburg. To make the project sustainable, Bradley opened up the agency ” Black Universe” where he and his partner Joana Kohrs, create a space to support colored actors within Hamburg and Berlin. Black Agency wants to get rid of stereotypical roles and establish the variety in the film industry.
Because the Film celebrated a huge success during his first screening weeks, THUG will be showcased in an Open-Air Cinema at the Lohmühlenpark in Hamburg on Saturday the 26th, 21 pm.
